Road to Compostela
31 oil paintings and about 130 watercolors make up this “pilgrimage” series. Beginning in Paris and taking various roads that are marked by the UNESCO’s World Heritage designation as part of the treasure of our world this pilgrimage road winds through France, crosses the Pyrenees and makes its way through Spain to finally arrive at Santiago de Compostela. The art works illustrate the wonder and the scope of this greatest of all pilgrimage routes. Begun in the 9th century pilgrims have left home and family to somehow find a deeper spiritual meaning to our world. Each year pilgrims continue to take this road. This artist traveled to France and Spain in 2001 drawing and painting watercolors and then returned home to St. John’s Abbey where he created 31 oil paintings to offer to the world a new cultural experience of the route |
